Metropolitan cities across the world have been littered with salad bars, yet it took Amsterdam some time to embrace this healthy and trendy concept. Long gone are the days where the thought of a salad bar conjured up images of stainless steel containers filled with soggy lettuce, diced tomatoes and a few uninspiring toppings. The salad bar is here to stay! In 2012 two men, raised in the Dutch countryside on reclaimed land, also known as the ‘Noordoostpolder’, started Juice & Salad, Amsterdam’s very first salad bar. A long-standing passion for fresh, rural produce resulted in a dizzying array of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, lunches and hearty and healthy, not to mention tasty salads. I’m very happy they decided to open a second salad bar in the West of Amsterdam recently, not far from my house. The best feature ever is by far the ‘create your own’ option. With a huge selection of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, grains, herbs and dressings to choose from. What is more, it’s all fabulously affordable. Source images: Juice & Salad
